Carlota "Lolota de Bibi" Reis, 83, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 9, 2021. She was the wife of the late Frank Dos Reis. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, she was the daughter of the late Joao and Maria (Conceição) Fernandes. Prior to arriving in the United States in 1975, Carlota worked and oversaw daily operations at Pousada (Inn) in Vila Nova Sintra, Brava. She worked at manufacturing companies in Pawtucket for many years as well as Hasbro for seventeen years before retiring.
Carlota was a woman of immense faith and regularly attended mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. She always extended kindness and generosity to everyone she encountered inside and outside of her home. She enjoyed telling stories about her early life in Brava, singing and dancing to her favorite mornas , and reciting poems by the renowned Cape Verdean poet, Eugénio Tavares. She cherished visits with her grandchildren, which often ended with an excerpt from one of her favorite poems, "Se bem é doce, bai é maguado; mas, se ka bado, ka ta birado" (translation: "If return is sweet, departure is bitter, but who does not leave, cannot return").
Carlota was the mother of the late Jaime DePina. She is survived by her children, Deolinda Reis, Maria Eugenia Reis, Maria Filomena Reis, Francisca Alves, Georgina Reis, and Rudy Reis, her brothers, Ildo Fernandes, Antonio "Totoi" Fernandes, and Carlos "Cajinho" Fernandes, her sister, Ricardina "Djicai" Fernandes, nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Pawtucket, however, due to the current restrictions, both the Mass and the Burial will be private. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
