Sheila A. Pliakas

Sheila A. Pliakas, 94, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully with her family by her side Monday, February 23, 2026. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Nicholas J. Pliakas. Born in Newport, RI, she was the daughter of the late Edward C. and Ellen (Murphy) Curran. She leaves her sons John (Betsy) Pliakas of Cumberland, RI, and Philiip Pliakas of Smithfield, RI. She was the grandmother of John "Jack" N. Pliakas, Jr., and Alex M. Pliakas of Cumberland, RI. She leaves a brother, Joseph Hall of Newport, RI, and the sister of the late Willam Curran of North Kingstown, RI, and Marry Alice Blake of Miami Shores FL.

She attended high school at Saint Cathrine Academy. She was a graduate of the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing, earning a Diploma in Nursing in 1952 and later she graduated from the Boston College School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She held multiple positions as a Registered Nurse, including positions at the Boston Public Health Service, Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Lahey Clinic, Rhode Island Hospital, and Newport Hospital. She was an instructor of nursing at the Rhode Hospital School of Nursing and the Newport Hospital School of Nursing. She retired from the Woonsocket Visiting Nurse Association as the coordinator of the Maternal Child Health Program.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM in Saint John Vianney Church, Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. Burial will follow in RI Veteran's Cemetery, Exeter.

Visiting hours will be held, on Thursday, prior to the Mass, from 8:30 – 10:15 AM in the O'Neill Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland.
