Robert T. Magill (Tom)
March 22, 1938 - June 1, 2025
Robert Thomas Magill of Pawtucket, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed peacefully into eternal life on June 1, 2025 at the age of 87, surrounded by his family. He was the former husband of Kathleen A. Magill for 30 years. As a lifelong Pawtucket resident, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Alice (Carr) Magill. He is predeceased by Kathleen, his loving sisters, Mary Alice Waterhouse, Sarah (Sally) Szumita, and beloved brother, Timothy C. Magill. He leaves his brother James Michael Magill of North Smithfield. He was the loving father of William P. Magill and his wife Colleen of Pawtucket, Karen Connor of Wrentham, and Elizabeth Keough and her husband, Steven of Cumberland. He was the beloved "Pa" of Kendall Bachar and Kate Magill, William and Henry Connor, and Jack, Sarah, and Evan Keough.
We will celebrate Tom's life on Walcott Street where his love of lifelong learning began. He graduated from St. Joseph Elementary School and St. Raphael Academy, where he was an All-State long-distance runner and track star. He led the 1955 team to its first State Championship. Tom continued his Catholic education and cross-country career at Providence College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree.
Tom was a proud veteran who served in the US Marine Corp and US Army, based in Germany, during the Vietnam Era. After military service, Tom was a Pawtucket Firefighter for 21 years, retiring as Lieutenant in 1987. He then earned his Masters of Library and Information Science from University of Rhode Island, proudly graduating with his daughters in 1992. Tom retired his professional career as Director of Library Services at Bryant University. He continued his learning with his ongoing civic commitments to the City of Pawtucket, most recently as a member of the Zoning Board, through his love for politics and campaigning, and by reading every day. Tom was co-chair of the City of Pawtucket Centennial Celebration (1986), and founding co-chair of the Pawtucket St. Patrick's Parade (1982-1984).
He enjoyed playing and watching golf and was "Forever a Friar" following PC basketball for decades. He loved watching the Boston Red Sox on TV, and live Pawsox games at McCoy Stadium, where he spent many years as a young boy.
While Tom had many life pleasures and hobbies, he found the most joy watching his grandchildren succeed in the classroom, on the fields and courts, in the pool, and at the rink. Their happiness and accomplishments made him so proud. If you were lucky enough to know Tom, you know how much family meant to him, and how grateful he was to have his children and grandchildren.
Tom treasured his long-standing monthly breakfasts with his siblings. Tom also enjoyed many years of adventures with his close friends, Paula McAloon and Bob Afonso.
