Robert "Bob" F. Hines, 96, of Pawtucket, RI, went home to be with the Lord on November 17, 2023 at Rhode Island Hospital. Bob, as he was affectionately called, was born on December 3, 1926 to the late John and Elizabeth Hines. Bob was raised in Pawtucket and attended St. Raphael Academy. During World War II, he served his country proudly with the 88th Infantry Division in Italy. The troops of the 88th were so fierce on the battlefield, it is said German prisoners declared that the division fought "like devils." As a result, the division took up the nickname the "Blue Devils" based on their blue shoulder patches.
Upon returning to Rhode Island, Bob continued his education at Providence College, graduating in 1952. He joined the probation & parole department of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections in 1956. He was assigned adult probation and parole cases in Pawtucket and went on to enjoy a long career, retiring in 1985.
Bob was a parishioner of the Holy Family Parish. He will be greatly missed as a witty conversationalist who liked telling funny stories and making people laugh. When he wasn't avidly reading about history, celebrating his Catholic faith, talking on the phone, dining out, or watching old comedies, the news, or World War II movies, he was laughing and joking with others.
Bob leaves behind his beloved of 57 years, Deirdre Donohue, and his nieces Barbara Allen (and her husband Joe), Anne Archambault (and her husband Charles), Rowena Sullivan, and Leslie Swanson. Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his four siblings, Frederick Hines, Edmund Hines, Raymond Hines, and Dorothy Hines, as well as his niece, Joan Baldini.
