Obituary

Rita H. Walther (Greene), 82, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 — just the way she lived most of her life: gracefully, stubbornly independent, and with a quiet strength that made everyone around her feel a little braver.

Born in Providence, Rita was the daughter of the late Mae Xavier Greene (Vincent) and Charles Greene. She grew up with grit, heart, and a sense of humor that could soften even the hardest days. For many years, she worked in the jewelry industry — a fitting place for a woman who had a knack for finding beauty in unexpected places and who herself sparkled a bit brighter than most.

Rita was many things in her lifetime — a devoted mother, a fiercely loyal friend, an expert storyteller, and occasionally, a lovingly stubborn matriarch who somehow was always right (and yes, she fully expected us to admit that now). She loved her family deeply and unapologetically, and she showed that love in ways big and small — through wisdom, through laughter, and through the kind of honesty that could make you laugh even when you didn't want to.

She is survived by her children, Ann M. Turgeon and Scott H. Walther, who will forever carry her strength, humor, and stubborn streak in their hearts. Rita was endlessly proud of her grandchildren — Adrian Cilento, Paige (Walther) Hernandez, Brooke Walther, and Cassidy Walther — each of whom she believed was absolutely perfect, and she was never wrong about that either. Rita was predeceased by her son, the late Eric S. Walther, and husband Henry A. Walther, with whom she is now joyfully reunited — no doubt catching up, keeping an eye on us, and probably shaking their heads at a few of our choices. She also leaves behind a brother, Gerald Greene, and a sister, Patricia Valis. She was the sister of the late Charles Greene, Bernadette Arruda, Carol Angarella, Elsie Vadnais, Joseph Greene, Norman Greene, and Anita Tasca, as well as countless friends, neighbors, and loved ones who will miss her stories, her spirit, and her ability to make ordinary days feel meaningful.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to celebrate Rita's life at a Funeral Service on Saturday, January 3, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Manning-Heffern-O'Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket, RI. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Burial will be private, just as Rita would have preferred — simple, dignified, and surrounded by love.

Rita leaves behind a family who will forever miss her — and a legacy of humor, resilience, and warmth that will continue to shine in all of us.
