Obituary

Richard Ryan Cartwright, 82, passed away on December 17 th . He was the husband to Joan (Carroll) Cartwright, his childhood sweetheart. Richard was the son of the late George E. and Helen (Ryan) Cartwright. He was a longtime resident of Cumberland.

Richard leaves two sons, Peter R. & wife Jeanette, and Paul R. & wife Vickie. He is survived by his daughter Ann, Daughter-in-law Jane Cartwright, several grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of Edward R. Cartwright and wife Fran, late brother Robert R Cartwright, and sister Ann Louise. Richard was predeceased by his son Gary Cartwright.

He attended Mercy Mount Country Day and graduated from St. Raphael Academy in 1958. He was a United States Coast Guard Veteran and a world traveler.

Richard was employed as a Locomotive Engineer for the New Haven, Penn Central, Amtrak and C.S.X. Railroad for 35 years, and a former Vice President of Local 14 Brotherhood of Fireman. He was a cook for Archies Tavern, Bristol Country Club, Shuttle Meadows Country Club, Iron Horse Restaurant, and at Big Joe's in Woonsocket. He was previously an Elk at Lodge 920 in Pawtucket.

Richard was a member of the American Legion, Post 79 Central Falls where he served as post Commander, Finance Officer, and Bar Manager. He was also the State Commander for the American Legion from 2014 – 2015. He was the Vice President of the Central Falls Veterans Council and Treasurer of the 40 & 8. Richard was also a member of Seniors Travelers (formerly the Royal Travelers) and a member of Leon Mathieu Senior Center in Pawtucket. He ran the Hi-low Jack Club for several years and volunteered for Meals on Wheels when Fern Brown was Director.

He was the proud owner of several Ford Mustangs over the years.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Funeral Service on Monday, January 2nd at 11:00 AM in the Costigan-O'Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 AM prior to the service in the Funeral Home. Burial to follow at St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Hewes St., Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Richard's memory, may be made to a Veterans organization of your choice.
