Obituary

It is with deep love that we announce the passing of Raymond Alfred Nolan.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend who left this world peacefully surrounded by his family on October 7, 2025 at the age of 98. He was the loving husband of the late Mary (Lee) Nolan. Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Estelle (Larkin) and Bernard Nolan.

He is survived by his 5 children Nancy Vezina and her husband Paul, Steven Nolan and his wife Mary Jane, Carol Nolan Paul and her husband Rick, Tracy Nolan-Leclaire and her husband Kris, and David Nolan and his wife Kristen. Raymond leaves behind his 5 grandchildren Steven Nolan, Cody Paul, Lauren Leclaire, Violet Nolan, and Callan Nolan. He was the brother of Edmund Nolan and Leo Nolan.

Raymond grew up in Providence, RI and attended Hope High School. After his time serving in the US Army, he attended Providence College where he earned a Bachelor of Science  degree. Later in his career he would earn a Master's degree in Education from Bridgewater State University. He started his career working in the Hematology department at Rhode Island Hospital and would later open a hematology laboratory business. Raymond served several years as the Superintendent of the Providence Sewage Department before he settled into his true professional passion as a science teacher at Woonsocket High School where he assumed the department chair position.

Raymond was truly a man beloved by many, bringing a certain light to wherever he went. He was a devout Catholic his entire life and in his later years developed a very close personal relationship with the Lord. He was a member of the Men of St. Joseph International group and an avid evangelist. He was known for passing out rosaries, praying for others, and holding religious movie nights at his assisted living community Wyndemere Woods. He was probably best known for his role as a mentor and advocate for his students. He would work many late hours coming up with just the right science experiment to make his lessons impactful for his students. Decades after his retirement his former students still talk about him with affection. Above all, Raymond was a loving husband and father. He was smitten with his beautiful wife Mary and provided an inspirational living testimony of that love, caring for her so tenderly in the years before her passing.

Raymond was a scientist and an educator by trade, but he also had an artistic flair. He was a self-taught pianist and painter, spending much of his time in later years creating landscape paintings. He volunteered in service for the Northern Rhode Island Council of the Arts and the Woonsocket Historical Society.
