Obituary

Max Volterra, 86, of Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Monday, October 3, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Marion (Sitnick) Volterra. They were happily married for over 50 years. Born in Milan, Italy, he was the son of the late Renzo and Germana (Levi) Volterra, and brother of the late Judge Guy Volterra.

In 1938 as Jews fled persecution in Italy, Max emigrated to France with his parents and brother, where they awaited visas for nearly a year, to immigrate to the United States. After attending and graduating from Attleboro public schools, he served in the U.S. Navy and got his degrees from Brown University and George Washington Law School. Max practiced law in a large Boston firm for a short time before starting a practice in Attleboro, eventually taking on partners to form Volterra, Goldberg, Mangiaratti & Jacobs. He enjoyed explaining the law and helping others navigate it.

He had a strong sense of ensuring equitable treatment for those in need, expressed through his engagement in pro bono work, support for Bristol Community College (BCC), and other Attleboro based organizations.

Max received a Community Service Award issued by the Massachusetts Bar Association in 1994. He was named Person of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 2009. He was a board member of the BCC Foundation, where he was named Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 2006, and later awarded the John J. Sbrega, Ph.D., Exemplary Service Award in 2022. In addition, he is a former member of the Attleboro City Council, Massachusetts House of Representatives, provided pro-bono legal counsel to several organizations, was member of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Foundation, and was a longtime member of the Attleboro Redevelopment Authority and the Attleboro Elections Committee.  He acted as Attleboro City Solicitor (as well as Rehoboth and Seekonk) and served as Governor Dukakis' legal counsel.

He was an active member of Congregation Agudas Achim synagogue, and tutored students at the local Literacy Center.

Max enjoyed skiing, sailing out of Wellfleet harbor, and travel with his family and many friends. He also enjoyed companionship of his pets – multiple dogs and cats, cooking and feeding others, singing in an ecumenical choir, and engaging in local politics. Besides his wife, Marion, he is survived by his children, Hannah Francis and Joel Volterra, and his grandchildren, Owen Francis, Sonja Francis, and Ava Volterra. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Melanie Ray, and niece and nephew Gia (Volterra) De Saulnier and Josh Volterra.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Funeral Services on Sunday, October 9th at 2:00 pm at Congregation Agudas Achim, 901 North Main Street, Attleboro. Per synagogue policy, masks are required in the building. Burial will follow in Agudas Achim Cemetery, South Main Street, Attleboro, with Shiva at the Volterra home at 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in Max's honor, to the Attleboro Arts Museum , 86 Park St. Attleboro, MA 02703, or the Attleboro Area Interfaith Collaborative (Food Pantry), 44 Peck St., Attleboro, MA 02703.
