Obituary

Joseph A. Capineri, 96, born May 2, 1929, passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. He was the son of the late Angelo and Giovanna (Veroni) Capineri of Massa-Carrara, Italy, a Provence of Tuscany, Italy. He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Ethel M. (Pierce) Capineri and his grandson 1LT Gregory F. Zavota. He is survived by his son, Administrative Associate Justice Stephen J. Capineri of the RI Family Court (Ret)and his wife Nancy, his daughter Lisa Millar and her husband Ronald. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Peter Capineri, Marissa Shallcross, her husband Derrick, Michael Capineri, his wife Catherine and Kerri Zavota. He is further survived by his six great grandchildren Ronan, Isla, Camden, George, Charles, Dayvon and his daughter Inola.

Joseph was a graduate of Providence College and Boston University School of Law. He graduated second in his class and was a member of the law review. He founded his own law firm in Pawtucket, RI and practiced law with great love and dedication well into his eighties. He also served as a proud member of the RI House of Representatives, District 81, from 1957 through 1980. Joe and his wife Ethel were longtime members of Pawtucket Country Club. Joe frequented the club daily where many lifelong friendships were formed. For the last few years, he no longer played golf but engaged in spirited card games. He will be missed for his keen intellect, his fast wit and sense of humor. Professional and social organizations he was a member of included: American Bar Association, RI Bar Association, Pawtucket Bar Association, Retired Legislator's Association, Sons of Italy, Italian Dramatic Independent Political Club, To-Kalon Club, Elks Lodge, Bear Lakes Country Club, West Palm Beach FI, and Pawtucket Country Club.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 346 Waterman Avenue, East Providence, RI. Burial will follow in Mount Saint Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. Visiting hours Tuesday, July 15th from 4:00 - 7:00 PM in the Manning-Heffern-O'Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph's name to: RI CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) or to Tunnels2Towers Foundation , or Hattie Ide Chaffee Home , 200 Wampanoag Trail, Riverside, RI, 02915.
