Obituary

John J. ("Jack") McDermott, 91, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. For 52 years, he was the loving husband of Rosemary (O'Neil) McDermott until her passing in 2011. Born and raised in Pawtucket, RI he was the son of Lillian (Cornell) and John J. McDermott Sr. and the brother of James E. McDermott and Elizabeth ("Betty") Walsh, all of whom preceded him in death.

Jack is survived by his five daughters. Elizabeth ("Lisa") Spencer and her husband David of Seekonk, MA; Margaret ("Meg") O'Neill and her husband Peter of Seekonk, MA; Anne McDermott of East Providence, RI; Jane Green and her husband Joe of Foxboro, MA; and Jacqueline ("Jackie") Marovelli and her husband Bruno of Seekonk, MA. He was Pepe to his eleven "only" grandchildren. Sam (Monica), Julia (Joey), Anna (Victor) and Rachel (Dim) Spencer. Peter O'Neill (Culver). Carolyn (Andy) Canady, Michael (Tori) and Sarah Green. Christopher, John (Sinead) Marovelli and Lauren (J.C.) LeBarron. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Jack Mercier, Eden O'Neill, Clyde Marovelli and Morgan and Dante Marovelli and Jamison LeBarron and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Jack was a proud alumnus of St. Raphael Academy and the College of the Holy Cross where he graduated with a degree in Economics and Marketing. He was a member of the golf teams both in high school and in college. Years later, he would go back to coach the high school team at St. Raphael for many years.

Upon graduating from college Jack proudly served his country in the US Navy.  He was assigned to the USS Taberer DE 418 berthed in Newport, RI where he fought the fictitious Battle of the Newport Bridge. He was the former owner of Atlantic Paper and Twine Co. until his retirement in 1992.

Jack was an avid and accomplished golfer and proud member of Pawtucket Country Club, where he held the distinction of being the longest standing member for 79 years. He was also a member at Ballenisles Country Club where he served as Chairman of the Board for many years, and then Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, FL. For many years he served on the Selection Committee for the John P. Burke Memorial Scholarship Fund for deserving employees of RI golf clubs.

Jack collected many awards and trophies over the years in his professional and golf careers. However, he was most proud of the National Award of Merit for Man of the Year presented to him by the Pawtucket Boys Club.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 20th at 10:00 AM in St. Margaret Church, 1098 Pawtucket Ave. Rumford, RI. Burial will follow in Seekonk Cemetery, Seekonk MA. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 19th, from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Manning-Heffern-O'Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage St., Pawtucket.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations of remembrance, to the Blackstone Valley ARC , 500 Prospect Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860.
