Joan M. Coleman, 91, of North Smithfield and formerly of Cumberland, passed away peacefully with her children close by on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.  Born in Pawtucket, and brought up in Lincoln, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Melvina (King) Primeau.

Joan attended Sacred Heart High School where she was the first in family to graduate high school. She married John A. Coleman and became a homemaker, bringing up her family in Cumberland. Joan was an early advocate for children with disabilities. She and her son John were instrumental in obtaining a ramp for handicapped children at Meeting Street School in Providence. She was president of the PTO at Cumberland Elementary School for several years. Joan also was chairwoman for the Northern Rhode Island Easter Seals Association and the March of Dimes.

Joan attended Providence College night school for several years and was employed by Peerless Co., Edgemere School and Memorial Hospital. In her retirement Joan resided in Venice, Florida and began a journey to see the world with her friends and family.

She is survived by her children, Kevin Coleman, Colleen Coleman Bauerle, Daniel Coleman, and Erin Coleman Isselmann, thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Debi Coleman and John Patrick Coleman. She was a beloved aunt, cousin and friend. She was also the sister of the late Ellen Quinn, Dolores Correia, Dorothy Iandoli, and John Primeau. She was predeceased by her former husband John A. Coleman of Cumberland and Narragansett.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, April 25th at 11:30 AM in Saint Joseph Church, 1303 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, April 25th from 9:30 – 11:00 AM, prior to the Mass in the O'Neill Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland.
