Ismenia Rainha Faria Bernardo, 87, of Seekonk, MA, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Jose (Jorge) Bernardo, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage, a partnership rooted in devotion, resilience, and a lifetime of shared dreams.
Born in Delgada, Portugal, Ismenia was the daughter of the late Joaquim Eduardo and Georgina (Rainha). In 1965, she immigrated to the United States with her husband, proudly earning her citizenship and building a new life grounded in hard work, faith, and community.
Ismenia was the heartbeat of Bernardo’s Nursery in Seekonk, where she worked alongside her husband for 45 years. She had a gift for creating the most beautiful flower pots and arrangements, each one crafted with intention and care. Customers often returned not just for the plants, but for her: her warmth, her curiosity, her way of remembering the details of their lives. She made everyone feel like part of the family.
While helping run the nursery, Ismenia also worked full-time as a machinist at Texas Instruments, where she was admired for her work ethic, and her ability to build friendships across generations. Even with long workdays, she always found time for others. Her cooking, her crocheting, and her gardening were extensions of her love ways she nurtured her family, her neighbors, and her community. In her retirement her family took center stage.
A devoted parishioner of Saint Anthony’s Church in Pawtucket, Ismenia lived her faith through service, humility, and kindness. She carried her Portuguese heritage with pride, weaving tradition into every holiday, every meal, every story she shared with her children and grandchildren.
Ismenia is survived by her children, Marie Bernardo Sousa and her husband Alan, and Jorge Bernardo and his wife Jennifer. She also leaves her grandchildren, Christian Wesolowski and his wife Stephanie, Samantha Bernardo, and Jack Bernardo, each of whom she adored and encouraged in their own unique paths. She was the sister of the late Leonora Monteiro, Beatriz Faria, and Augustino Faria. She also leaves behind her cherished nephews, Joe Monteiro and Al Monteiro, who held a special place in her heart and remained connected to her throughout her life.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 10:00 AM in Saint Anthony Church, 32 Lawn Avenue, Pawtucket. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 28th, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM in the Manning-Heffern-O’Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ismenia’s memory may be made to Hope Health Hospice Center, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
