Obituary

Gary S. Bowen, 74, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2024 with his loving wife and family by his side. He was the devoted husband of Monique (Gadoury) Bowen. Longtime residents of Cumberland, RI, they were happily married for 46 years. Born in Quincy, MA, he was the son of the late Paul and Frances (O'Brien) Bowen.

Gary married his beloved wife, Monique, in 1978.  They were blessed with four wonderful children; Sarah Martin, Emily Gustus and her husband, John, Matthew Bowen and his wife, Victoria, and Nicholas Bowen, seven beautiful grandchildren; Gregory, William and Abigail Martin, Lily, Jack, and Benjamin Gustus, and Isabella Bowen. He also leaves his siblings, Paul Bowen, Lesley King, Wayne Bowen, James Bowen, many in-laws and nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Gary grew up in Sharon, MA. He attended Fairfield University, where he played basketball and graduated in 1973. He went on to play professional basketball in Geneva, Switzerland and in the Eastern Basketball Association. He was inducted into the Massasoit Community College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011 and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

Gary had a successful 40+ year career in the forest products industry in sales and sales management. Gary was a member of the Sharon Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf with his brothers in the "Thursday Night League". However, what was most important to Gary was his Faith and his family, Gary was a daily Communicant, and longtime parishioner at St. Joan's Church where he served as President of the Mother Teresa Society, was a member of the parish Finance Committee, was a parish Trustee, and served as Chairman of St. Joan's Catholic Charity Fund Appeal for over 25 years.

It was Gary's role as loving husband and "Dad" which defined his life. When not working he attended all his children's activities and was a coach for their various sports during their formative years. As life moved on Gary was always supportive and proud of their endeavors accomplishments.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 16th, at 10:00 AM at Saint Joan of Arc Church, 3357 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 15th, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the O'Neill Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joan of Arc Church in his memory.
