Evelyn T. Toole, 89, of Middletown, RI, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Saturday, August 25, 2018. Daughter of the late John and Evelyn (McGinty) Dempsey, Evelyn was born and raised in Pawtucket, RI alongside her four siblings, James Dempsey, and the late Grace Herbert, Jack and Edward Dempsey.
She is survived by all six children: Susan O'Halloran, married to Tim and mother to Kirk, Claire, and Will; Mary Ellen Wians, married to the late Bob Wians, and mother of Rob; Elizabeth Larcom, married to Lt. Col. Charles B. Larcom (US Army RET), mother of Patrick (married to Alexandra), Megan, Erin, Ian, Chad, and Beth; Austin A. Toole Jr., father of Jake, Samantha, and Sarah; Carolyn Bancroft, married to Glenn, mother of Maura and Cara; and Stephen Toole.
After graduating East High in Pawtucket with her best friends Eileen Little and Joan Dingley, Evelyn began her career as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Technologies. She worked 11 years, until she gave birth to the first of her six children at age 29. She returned to work in her 40's as a care giver to the elderly until her retirement in her 70's.
Evelyn raised her family in Pawtucket, New Jersey, and Rumford before moving them to Old Saybrook, CT, where her summers were frequented with family visits to Indian Town Beach and boat rides with her close friends, Anna Marie and Don Kenny. Evelyn's love for the beach remained, and in her later years she continued to enjoy visits to Second Beach, Cape Cod, and Block Island with her children, grandchildren, brother Jim, and sister-in-law Ann Toole.
Though Evelyn spent much of her life in the Rhode Island area, in her 89 years she traveled often and saw the world. Her children brought her on overseas trips to France, England, Austria, Hawaii, Germany, and Ireland, where she loved listening to live music and spending time with her family. On her trip to Ireland, one of her favorites because of her Irish heritage, she shocked everyone by exposing her previously hidden ability to play the spoons alongside the Irish musicians. This instance is indicative of Ev. She was inherently funny and always kept people laughing with surprise one-liners and unanticipated actions.
Evie always had an appreciation for music, and in her older age she continued to watch live bands locally at the Newport Naval Station with her family. Her daughter Liz always made sure she attended the annual Navy Christmas Concert with her dear friends Joan O'Neill and Joan Morrison.
Evelyn's beautiful spirit touched the lives of many, and she will be remembered for countless reasons, some of which include her sharp humor, her notorious "stage whisper", her expressive bright blue eyes, her love for babies and animals (especially her dog, Dempsey!), and the joy she extended to all friends and family in her life.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, August 29 th at 9AM from the Costigan-O'Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in Saint Joseph Church of Holy Family Parish, 195 Walcott Street, Pawtucket. Burial will be in Mount Saint Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours Tuesday from 5-8PM in the Costigan-O'Neill Funeral Home.
May Evelyn Toole, loving mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend, rest in peace.
