Obituary

Ellen M. Carr (1961-2024)

Ellen M. Carr, 62, died peacefully on April 3 at Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I., her family by her side.

A positive force full of love, kindness, and compassion, Ellen's legacy is the family, friends, and former students whose lives she made better by her presence in their lives. In every aspect of her life, Ellen gave vastly more than she took, and her greatest joy came from making others happy. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Born in Boston, Ellen lived in Jamaica Plain as a young child before her family settled in Dover, Mass. She graduated in 1983 from Providence College, where she met her future husband of 38 years, Joseph Carr, at the student radio station.

Ellen and Joe began their life together in Bangor, Me., where she worked at New England Telephone until transitioning to full-time childcare when their third child was born. Ellen enrolled in a master's program in teaching at the University of Maine at age 40, launching a career in teaching where she excelled as an English and math teacher at Orono Middle School.

After relocating to Rhode Island in 2012, she worked as a substitute teacher, tutor, and a staff member in PC's Office of Institutional Advancement until stepping back to focus on managing her illness.

Ellen is survived by the three children she and Joe raised in Brewer, Me.: Brendan of Norfolk, Va.; Colleen Chapruet and her husband, Robert, of Fairfield, Conn.; and Brian and his wife, Dafne, of Swampscott, Mass. Her life was enriched beyond description in recent years by the three grandchildren she adored: Bradley Chapruet, Finn Chapruet, and Ruby Carr.

Other survivors include her mother, Ellen C. Good of Westwood, Mass.; sisters Irene Good and her wife, Theresa O'Keefe, of West Roxbury, Mass. and Marie Long of Maynard, Mass.; brothers Albert Good and his wife, Catherine, of Westwood and Francis Good and his wife, Denise, of Millis, Mass.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael and Teri Carr of Veazie, Me.; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and a legion of friends. She was predeceased in 2019 by her father, Albert E. Good.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for St. John Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, R.I., on Tuesday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m., with a Rite of Committal to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may visit on Monday, April 8 between 4:00-7:00 p.m. at O'Neill Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road in Cumberland.

Memorial gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, where Ellen received extraordinary care for metastatic breast cancer for nearly 10 years.
