Alice E. Elgar, 97, of Cumberland, passed away with her family by her side June 27, 2023. She was the wife of the late Aproniano Elgar, of Nabua, Camarines Sur, Philippines. She was the daughter of the late John and Stella (Gurka) Davidson of Plainfield, CT. Born on her grandparents large timber and crop farm, in Franklin, VA, Alice spoke fondly of her early childhood alongside younger siblings Pearl J. Ticsay, now deceased of San Diego, CA and her brother Earl Davidson, now of Danielson, CT. Oft-told tales of scrambling over barn roofs and riding ox-carts to school, painted a vivid tableau of her young life in rural Virginia during the 1930s.
Married fifty-five years and living variously on military bases, including in Nebraska during her husband's long US Navy service, she finally settled them in the Davisville section of North Kingstown, RI raising her family during his last posting as Steward 1st Class for the Flag Officer's Mess at the Quonset Naval Station. A child of the Great Depression, Alice was industrious, frugal and strong-willed. An avid gardener, she turned the corner lot of her treasured home into an oasis of color and sound. Filled with bird feeders and garden ornaments of all types, it made for an interesting and vibrant landscape with separate areas for the cultivation of vegetables, quiet contemplation and shady sitting areas. Carpentry, painting, and mechanical repairs were always at hand and ably completed by Alice who was a tireless worker. Any tradesmen she was forced to hire, dare not attempt slipshod work under her careful and exacting supervision.
A caring soul to those who knew her early on, she worked with troubled youth in the CT court system and later as an associate for TJX Companies on Post Road in North Kingstown. Deeply rooted in Wickford, the town she so loved, Alice had many friends both near and far to whom she loved traveling to see and converse. She knew every highway, byway, back road and cut-thru from Plainfield to Providence, first taking her children (and then her only grandchild) on drives through the countryside – much as her father had done with her on treasured "Sunday drives." Alice even planned intrepid cross-country trips with her young family, including to Tijuana, Mexico.
She is survived by her children Kathi G. Caianiello, and her partner Chris Bertrand, of Cumberland, and Jacki A. Elgar and her husband George Hagerty of Stoughton, MA. She also leaves her granddaughter, Stella (Elwood) Sheputa and husband Kazimir Sheputa of Clinton, MA. Instrumental in teaching her grandchild to read at a very early age, but doubting she would see all the future graduations, she did live to know Stella had received her DVM degree from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.
The funeral and burial will be private.
